August 8, 2017 Hershal Patel

In this episode we talk about the White House staff turnover, including Anthony "The MOOCH" Scaramucci. We are in the middle of Governor Abbott's infamous Bathroom Bill Special Session. Dawnna Dukes is back in the news, this time pulling in RGV Texas Senator Rene Oliveira. We also touch on the border wall proposed to run through Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge, and the problems that new immigration policies pose on the shrimping businesses.

Valley Centric Rio Grande Valley Podcast Episode 4

In this episode we issue a correction for some lazy reporting from our previous episode. We talk about some of the strangest bills that were filed this legislative session, including the unusual attention of congress on feral hogs. Senator Rafael Edward "Ted" Cruz will be visiting the Valley in a few days, attending McAllen's July 4th festivities, and we're not crazy about that idea. We also dip our toes in the TrumpCare swamp.

South Padre's New Bridge, Trump's Border Wall & Business with Mexico, Voting in the Valley, James Comey

May 9, 2017 Hershal Patel

This week, we follow up on a couple of items from our first episode. There's news on South Padre Island's second causeway, and after reviewing the results of Valley elections, we encourage all of our listeners to go the vote out! We also take a dive into Trumps border wall, and it's impact on illegal immigration and Mexican tourism to the Rio Grande Valley.

Here is a report (PDF) from the Center for Migration Studies that shows how overstaying on legal visas far outnumber illegal entries into the United States.

Here is McAllen's 2016 Crime Report and here is a link to McAllen's list of crime reports.

McAllen Mayoral Race, Sanctuary Cities, South Padre Island's Spring Break Debate, ACHA

May 5, 2017 Hershal Patel

In this episode we discuss the McAllen Mayoral Race between incumbent Jim Darling and Othal Brand, Jr. Then, we talk about the sanctuary cities ban SB4 that is awaiting ratification by Governor Abbott. We discuss the possible impact of the bill in the Rio Grande Valley. South Padre Island is currently in the midst of a debate over Spring Break. Local watchdog groups and residents have proposed regulations that have some very interesting language. The ACHA has passed the US House. What does the ACHA mean for underserved areas like the Rio Grande Valley?
